Foreword

The Alan Buckland Collection

Alan was born in Acton, London in 1938. His grandfather drove one of the first steam lorries at Paddington station, his uncle worked at Old Oak shunting yard, his father worked at Ruislip London Transport station, and his home backed onto the Richmond- Broad Street line, now part of the London Overground line. So his love of railways and love of the G.W.R. was inevitable and life long.

As a boy he sat at Acton G.W.R station recording engine numbers in his spotters book, which we still have, and using these numbers later on the 'O' gauge engines he later built. His first model layout was a totally mixed collection of tin-plate coaches and engines bought by his father from the local second-hand dealer. He went on to build two narrow gauge layouts, an 'OO' gauge layout for his daughters, a 20ft EM gauge layout at home, an 'O' gauge layout and finally his dream loft layout which he finished only months before he passed away in 2022.

Alan's passion was the Great Western Railway. He was a long term member of the Great Western Society, a  member of the gauge 'O' Guild and  a Friend of Pendon . In his later years he fulfilled his dream of opening a model shop specialising in model trains - A &M Models in New Alresford. Alan was a skillful modeller and a talented painter and signwriter. His scratch built buildings and kit-built engines and other rolling stock are all built to scale and hand painted.
