Intact Insurance to auction historic archive collection in support of UK Youth
Intact Insurance is bringing a unique collection of historic insurance artefacts out of its archives for two charity auctions in support of UK Youth.
The auctions will feature artefacts connected to Intact Insurance and the wider insurance industry, including rare fire marks, historic documents, signage, silverware and artwork. Many of the items have remained in archive storage for decades and have never previously been available to the public.
Hosted by auction house, Special Auction Services, in Newbury, the auctions will take place on 9 June and 7 July, offering collectors and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to acquire pieces of insurance history while helping support young people across the UK.
The first auction will focus on fire insurance history, with the second featuring ephemera, silverware and artwork. Some of the standout lots in the collection include(1):
· A signed insurance claim involving Sir Winston Churchill, following a burglary at the Churchill family home in Hyde Park Gate in 1959.
· A handwritten letter linked to Madame Tussaud’s, believed to date from 1856, documenting additions to the famous waxwork collection.
· A solid silver medal awarded to “Zulu”, a dog credited with saving a Glasgow household from fire in 1897, after persistently barking to alert the family to danger.
· A rare early edition of the Phoenix Fire Office’s electrical safety rules, created by engineer Thomas Musgrave Heaphy in 1882.
The auction reflects Intact Insurance’s commitment to building resilient communities and creating opportunities for the next generation. By releasing selected items from its archive collection, Intact Insurance is helping fund programmes delivered through its multi-year partnership with UK Youth, such as Building Aspirations, a national employability programme supporting young people aged 18–24 who are not in education, employment or training, or at risk of becoming so.
