THE POTTER WHO CAME TO TEA…
We are thrilled to present an exceptional private collection of British Studio Pottery in our specialist glass and ceramics auction, “Sand & Clay”. This remarkable group showcases some of the most celebrated names in studio pottery and offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire pieces of outstanding quality and provenance.
Lovingly assembled over many years by a family with a genuine passion for studio ceramics, the collection reflects both connoisseurship and heartfelt appreciation. Many items were proudly displayed in the family home, while practical pieces—bowls, cups, and teapots—were used every day, bringing art and craftsmanship into their daily lives.
A particular highlight is the impressive selection of works by David Leach, one of Britain’s most respected potters. After leaving his father’s pottery in St Ives, David established the renowned Lowerdown Pottery in the mid‑1950s, where he refined his own distinctive style. While the influence of his father, the legendary Bernard Leach, is evident—especially through Japanese inspiration—David’s pieces stand out for their refined forms and technical mastery.
The auction also includes a beautiful vase by Bernard Leach himself, together with works by other admired makers such as Toff Milway, adding depth and variety to the offering. Whether you’re an established collector or discovering studio pottery for the first time, this sale presents something truly special.
The family’s connection with studio pottery began in Devon—affectionately known to them as the “Promised Land”. Growing up in Totnes as the son of the Grammar School Headmaster, the father developed his deep enthusiasm for ceramics through ties with Dartington Hall, founded in 1925 as a centre for the arts. Bernard Leach joined the Dartington staff in 1932, further cementing its influence on British craft.
Family holidays were often shaped around visits to Lowerdown Pottery in Bovey Tracey, where they would collect or commission new works from David Leach. Memories of his inspiring workshop, a much‑loved garden swing, and trips across the moor to Haytor remain an enduring part of their story.
One of the most charming anecdotes associated with the collection occurred when David Leach himself visited the family home in Oxfordshire. To his delight—and surprise—he was served tea in his own handmade pieces. He remarked that he very rarely saw people actually using his teapots, cups, and saucers—making this a delightful and personal moment in the life of the collection.
This outstanding collection will be offered in October 2026, and we warmly invite you to explore and bid on these unique and heartfelt pieces of British Studio Pottery.
