An 1830s Sonneberg papier-mâché and wood hand-cranked mechanical toy of a student playing a flute, the young man standing with crossed legs, dark blue suit, green cap, brown moulded curly hair, leaning against a tree with wood shaving leaves, on an orange painted wooden box with green painted grass top, when the wire handle is cranked the man moves his arm and plays his flute to a plinky tune —11 ½in. (29cm.) high (slight wear, arms probably very professionally restored and some retouching to hands and face) - see Early Toys 2, Leipold/Bickert/Kreher, 2024 - page 79, fig 6 and 7 for this actual model - shown in the sample book of the wholesaler Simon Lindner, Sonneberg, 1831 held at the Deutsches Spielzeugmuseum Sonneberg
